It's only a point.
Do Your Best for the Point, but Once It’s Passed, Let It Go
I recently posted about Roger Federer’s Graduation Speech at Dartmouth College on my Naver blog, as I was deeply moved by his words. Federer’s honesty and down-to-earth nature resonated with me, making his speech thoroughly enjoyable.
First of all, while tennis enthusiasts are well-acquainted with Roger Federer, I must admit that I’m not very familiar with tennis myself—I only knew his name until recently.
Roger Federer
Roger Federer, often called the "Tennis Emperor," is one of the most successful and famous athletes in tennis history.
Born in Basel, Switzerland, on August 8, 1981, Federer has won an astounding 20 Grand Slam singles titles, including a record eight Wimbledon championships.
His fluid movements, precise shots, and incredible versatility have captivated audiences worldwide.
Beyond his achievements on the court, Federer is known for his sportsmanship, professionalism, and philanthropic efforts through the Roger Federer Foundation, which supports educational projects in Africa and Switzerland.
Federer retired from tennis in 2022 and received an honorary doctorate in humanities from Dartmouth College in the United States in June. When I saw him speaking at Dartmouth’s graduation ceremony on YouTube, I realized that he was truly an amazing person, regardless of his tennis prowess.
Listening to his speech, I was struck by how the Tennis Emperor discussed the hard work, training, and perseverance required to achieve success. He emphasized that the world outside the tennis court is much wider and bigger, sharing his experiences and insights beyond the realm of tennis.
Effortless is a myth.
One of the gems from his speech that stood out to me was this: "Effortless is a myth." It may seem that success comes easily, but Federer reminds us that it never does—it always requires effort. He also mentioned the importance of focusing on the present moment, saying, "It’s only a point. Do your best, but once it’s passed, let it go."
He also conveyed that successful people know they will lose again and again and have learned how to deal with it. The path to success is never easy, and the key is to get back up and keep trying.
Below, I’ve shared the video of his speech. I hope you find it as inspiring as I did.
Thank you!
That's a really moving speech 🙏Thanks for sharing Robin.
