Helping My Dad with Parkinson’s: The Power of Stretching for Better Mobility and Well-Being

Writer's picture: Bright WisdomBright Wisdom

Today, I want to share something deeply personal—a YouTube video I created for my dad, who has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. When I first learned about his condition, I felt helpless, wondering what I could do to support him from afar. As I delved into research, I discovered that gentle exercise can significantly slow the progression of the disease, and stretching before bed is particularly beneficial. That realization sparked the idea for my video.

Since I am currently in Australia and my parents are in New Zealand, visiting them often isn’t easy. But through this video, I hope my dad can feel like we’re exercising together, even from a distance.

Understanding Parkinson’s Disease and the Role of Stretching

To create an effective video, I needed a fundamental understanding of Parkinson’s. Through YouTube and AI research, I learned that two main symptoms of the disease are:

  • Bradykinesia (slowness of movement)

  • Rigidity (muscle stiffness)

Because of these symptoms, stretching and muscle exercises play a crucial role in managing Parkinson’s. Here’s why stretching is so important:

Why Stretching is Essential for Parkinson’s Patients

  1. Enhances Flexibility – Regular stretching reduces muscle stiffness, improving ease of movement and daily functioning.

  2. Improves Balance and Coordination – This helps prevent falls, which is a major concern for Parkinson’s patients.

  3. Eases Muscle Pain – Stiffness can cause discomfort, and stretching provides much-needed relief.

  4. Boosts Mental Well-being – Exercise helps reduce stress and improve mood, offering both physical and emotional benefits.

  5. Maintains Mobility – Keeping up with regular movement can slow disease progression and help patients maintain independence longer.

My First Video: Bedtime Stretching Routine

The first video I created focuses on a bedtime stretching routine. This is designed to help my dad and others with Parkinson’s relax their muscles before sleep, making it easier to rest comfortably.

My Second Video: Morning Stretching Routine

The second video is all about morning stretching—an excellent way to wake up the body and ease stiffness after a night’s sleep. Here’s why morning stretching is beneficial:

The Benefits of Morning Stretching:

  • Enhances Blood Circulation – Promotes better oxygen flow, providing energy to start the day.

  • Reduces Muscle Tension – Loosens up stiffness that builds overnight, preventing discomfort.

  • Improves Mental Clarity – Helps with focus and concentration, setting a positive tone for the day.

  • Alleviates Stress – Releases built-up tension, fostering a relaxed state of mind.

  • Supports Good Posture – Helps align the spine and joints, reducing strain and preventing long-term musculoskeletal issues.

  • Increases Body Awareness – Encourages individuals to tune into their bodies and recognize any discomfort early.

  • Establishes a Healthy Routine – Making stretching a habit can lead to better overall well-being and a more energetic start to the day.

Let’s Stretch Together!

These simple stretching routines start from the toes and work their way up through the knees, hips, shoulders, and head—releasing tension step by step. The goal is that after following along with the video a few times, my dad (and anyone else watching) will be able to do these stretches independently.

Stretching isn’t just for Parkinson’s patients—it’s beneficial for everyone!

Making it part of your daily routine, both in the morning and before bed, can significantly improve overall health and well-being.

I hope these videos help my dad feel more connected to me and, most importantly, help him maintain his mobility and quality of life.
